After a tumultuous off-season where the Suns were unable to secure any sufficient backup at point guard for Steve Nash; the Suns have seemingly scoured the ends of the earth to find another point guard. 6 players were invited to the open tryout on 12/22 these players included: Troy Hudson, Darrell Armstrong, Damon Stoudamire, Dee Brown, Russell Walker Jr. and Eddie Gill. Armstrong at age 40, luckily was available to take some time away from playing shuffle board and checkers to come participate in the try-out. Rumor has it that the Suns wanted to invite Kevin Johnson (KJ) out of retirement but he declined due to his newly elected post as Mayor of Sacramento, CA (Congrats KJ)!
The Arizona Republic reports the Phoenix Suns have selected Dee Brown for their 13th roster spot. In all honesty, this was the only viable choice for the Suns. Hopefully Brown can provide intensity on defense for the occasionally listless Suns 2nd team. Brown was released by the Wizards on December 10th to clear roster space for Mike James and Javaris Crittenton, two guards acquired by the Wizards in a recent trade. For those who do not remember Dee Brown, he was an All-American in 2005 for the Illinois Fighting Illini. In the 2005 NCAA tournament, Dee Brown helped pilot one of the greatest comebacks in recent memory. Down 15 to the University of Arizona Wildcats with 4 minutes to play; Brown and teammates Luther Head and Deron Williams came back and stunned the Wildcats 90-89 to advance to the final four. The good news for the Suns is Dee Brown is full or heart and hopefully some of that desire might rub off on complacent superstars…cough cough…Amare Stoudemire.
