While the playoffs continue without them, The Phoenix Suns have promoted President Rick Welts to CEO. This is a relinquishing of title previously held by Robert Sarver. However, don’t view this as Robert Sarver giving up any actual power over the team. Rather, this was simply a move to prevent Welts from taking the job as CEO of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Rick Welts joined the Suns in July 2002 as President and COO (Chief Operating Officer). According to NBA.com, Welts began his career in basketball as a Seattle SuperSonics ballboy in 1969 and eventually became the club’s public relations director. In addition, he is credited with creating All-Star Weekend starting in 1984 and also the “Dream Team” marketing campaign in 1992.
There is some speculation that this was a move by Sarver to start weaseling his way out of the Phoenix Suns business venture. This is due to the fact that the recession is hurting ticket sales and revenue in general. I honestly don’t buy any of that. I think this speculation is just a chorus from Suns fans out there that want Sarver out of town and Colangelo back.
Wishful thinking is painful this time of year, the Suns are out fishing and Sarver and Kerr are still running the show. Think about this as a parting thought for today Sun’s fans; only 1 year and 2 weeks ago the Tim Duncan hit a 3-pointer to force double overtime in the Playoffs and we all know what happened after that!
It feels like eons ago doesn’t it?
