Gear Up For Suns Basketball

Suns Take Earl Clark @14 Amare deal to Golden State Likely

June 25th, 2009 at 5:50 pm

The Suns decided to stand pat with the 14th pick in this evenings NBA Draft; selecting the athletic Earl Clark from Louisville. The Suns must think of him as a viable replacement for Amare Stoudemire because AZCentral is reporting that the Suns have agreed in principle to a trade that would send Amare Stoudemire to the Golden State Warriors for the 7th pick Stephen Curry and Andris Biedrins. This trade can not occur until Wednesday of next week because Biedrins is a base year compensation player.

Looks the Suns are in rebuilding mode, Biedrins is a solid rebounder and defender down low but he and Earl Clark will not make up for Stoudemire and Shaq’s scoring capabilities. Curry essentially would be a backup for Nash this next season and eventually his replacement after this season. The Suns as we knew them before Kerr simply do not exist anymore.

I personally love Stephen Curry but with Barbosa, Richardson and Tucker all at Shooting Guard his minutes will be limited. Earl Clark would be the starter immediately at Power Forward with Lou Amundson as the backup. More to come tomorrow with full draft results.

In the 2nd round the Suns decided once again to take the worse of the two brothers in the Draft in Taylor Griffin. Griffin is the brother of the #1 overall pick in this year’s draft. Last year, the Suns selected Robin Lopez, who subsequently did nothing last season while his brother Brooks Lopez, flourished in New Jersey.

    David,

It appears that the window of opportunity is small and short lived. We went from thinking about a championship run to also runs to a lottery pick. WOW. Hard to believe.
I thought the Suns would be hurt when they lost Brian Colangelo but he hasn't exactly set the Eastern Conf. on fire at Toronto.

Den - I don't see the Suns making it to the playoffs next season, but they are taking the steps for the future. What a fall the Suns took after being so close.

    Hi Adam and David,
Nice posts. Tell me one thing please. How are the Suns going to make the playoffs next year with a lineup of Biedrins, Clark, Hill, Nash and Richardson? Does this group matchup with any decent team in the West? Will Grant Hill even be back? Oh man, what a disaster.
There will be more Laker fans in the stadium than ever.
I guess the Suns just had to bite the bullett re the salary cap. Rebuilding without a single really good inside player is very painfull. the Suns are in for a 20 win season this year and possibly an even worse season in 2011-12.
David, you are correct, the Suns probably need to move Nash while they can get some sort of value for him. He is sure to bail asap with this cast of players.
Steve Kerr for Mayor......anything but GM.
  • I do too, Curry is going to be good for long time...Stoudemire is gone after next season anyway...might as well get something for him. Biedrins is a really good rebounder as well.

I like that trade, if it goes down. I could easily see Nash out the door before end of next season too.
