By now virtually the entire world is abreast of the trade rumors that could send Shaquille O’Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers. A combo of Lebron James and a rejuvenated Shaquille O’Neal could be a lethal title winning combo.
The question truly is can Lebron James actually handle playing with Shaquille O’Neal? Kobe Bryant finally got out from under the shadow of Shaquille O’Neal by winning a championship without him. What if this same scenario happens to Lebron James? Just suppose Shaq goes to Cleveland and wins a title. Then Shaq retires the following season and James goes years without winning another title. The whispers of how great can he truly be if he can’t win without Shaq begin? This of course is all hypothetical, my point is does Lebron James truly want the drama that comes with Shaquille O’Neal. All signs as of right now point to a resounding yes!
According to ESPN.com:
“The Suns, who could save roughly $10 million by sending O’Neal to Cleveland for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic, also want to gain basketball value in any trade involving O’Neal, according to league sources with knowledge of the team’s thinking. With Wallace considering retirement and Pavlovic averaging fewer than six points over his six-year career, Cleveland would likely have to strengthen its offer to get O’Neal. The Suns reportedly had interest in Delonte West when the clubs discussed possible deals at the February trade deadline, but the Cavaliers greatly value West and would be hard-pressed to part with him. As it stands, the teams have had only preliminary discussions and will continue to speak in the days and weeks ahead.”
Why should the Suns have interest in Delonte West? Delonte West is an undersized shooting-guard, who can fill in as a backup at point-guard as well. The Suns already have a Delonte West type player in Leandro Barbosa. Not to mention the depth at shooting guard already (Jason Richardson, Leandro Barbosa, Alando Tucker). Ben Wallace is considering retiring and Sasha Pavlovic is a marginal role player at best. Other than a salary dump, I don’t see any benefit for the Suns here. I have got to believe that other offers are better out there, and after already fumbling around this team Steve Kerr should be on the chopping block if he messes this one up.
