Gear Up For Suns Basketball

The Suns Might Fly Under The Radar In 2010

With all the media hoopla surrounding the Phoenix Suns this last year and off-season, one would expect this team to be 30-52 next year. However, I am here to tell everyone that the reports of the Suns demise have been greatly exaggerated.

The Suns are coming off a 46 win season in which the team began only 28-23 while Terry Porter was the coach.  After that debacle, Kerr and Sarver realized that the Suns roster thrives with an uptempo style and promptly replaced the offensively challenged Porter with Alvin Gentry. The Suns went 18-13 the rest of the way and scoring was greatly increased. In addition, there were 5 separate games last year when the Suns were beaten by either a buzzer beater or lost the lead in the final minute. With 5 more wins, the Suns would have been the 6th seed in the Western Conference last season.

This off-season really began when Shaquille O’Neal was dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic. The team has already stated that neither player will really have an impact on the Suns next season. However, moving Shaq will have a huge positive impact on the Suns. Everyone is well aware that Steve Nash is not an excellent defender; coupled with Shaq on the pick and roll turns into career nights for opposing Point Guards. With the pieces that the Suns currently have, I expect Amare Stoudemire to play a lot more Center. Amare believe it or not, is not as susceptible to the pick and roll due to his speed and leaping ability. This may be the one and only time I will say this, but Amare at Center is a defensive upgrade for the Suns.  As it stands today, it looks more and more likely that Grant Hill will wind up with the Knicks or Celtics; thus allowing Jared Dudley to step into the starting SF role.  Here would be today’s starting lineup:

C: Amare Stoudemire PF: Earl Clark SF: Jared Dudley SG: Jason Richardson PG: Steve Nash.

So to summarize, the Suns starting lineup still has 2 premier scorers (Stoudemire and Richardson) and one of the best Point Guards of all-time in Steve Nash. Jared Dudley is a hard worker and solid defender and that is exactly the kind of attitude Earl Clark needs to mimic, especially considering his lack of focus at times at Louisville. The quickness of this team will be simply unmatched by any team in the NBA. The bench is still pretty solid with Leandro Barbosa, Lou Amundson, Alando Tucker, Goran Dragic and Robin Lopez. I am not saying the Suns are in the echelon of the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Magic and Cavaliers; rather they could fight for as good as the 3 seed in the West with their current roster. It is early still in the off-season, but what other playoff team in the West other than the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs have improved? That being said, the Suns could be one piece or one major injury from being in the thick of things in the West.

The Suns could easily fly under the radar and be written off completely for next season. If they can acquire a decent big-man such as Channing Frye (as has been rumored) in Free-Agency, they may exceed a lot of people’s expectations in 2010, especially the media’s.

    Adam,
I agree that Lou and Ike Diogu are similar in style and I really like the toughness than Lou brings. Ike is a much better offensive player and he can make free throws so he is not a liability late in a game. Lou needs to quit short-arming his shots or he will be out of the league. Ike is also a little taller and appears stronger than Lou. I think that the Suns should make some attempt to sign Diogu if he is available. He tore up the league at the end of last season.
The addition of Brandon Bass to the Magic gives them a frontline that compares with any in the league. If Jamir Nelson stays healthy, they have a great chance of getting back to the Championship. The young guys on that team will be a lot tougher and more experienced. They may well be the best in the NBA next year.
  • Hey Den,

In regards to Ike Diogu, all I have heard is the Kings are looking to re-sign him to a deal. We basically already have what he brings to a team in Lou Amundson.

Dallas definitely overpaid for Shawn Marion, Brandon Bass is on his way to Orlando to play alongside Dwight Howard. Bass is a solid player. Interested to see how some of the Suns do this evening in Las Vegas.

    Adam,
Where are the Suns on Ike Diogu? I believe that he is a free agent but we have heard little about him.

    Adam,
Dallas trades for Shawn Marion so he is back in the Western Conference. I couldn't believe that they are paying him 39 million over 5 years. I need his agent. Looks like Dallas is going to lose Brandon Bass. Perhaps the Suns can sign him to some sort of a conract.
I wish James Harden the best. I still don't believe that he went so high in the draft. In the biggest game of his life.......well you know the story.
  • Hey Den,

Houston is definitely done for, Houston filed for a salary exception for long-term injured players and the league accepted the claim...this leads me to believe that the league and Houston think Yao is out for the year. Dallas is an aging team, Kidd for 3 more years...bad move by Cuban. Not so sure about New Orleans...they are looking to move Chandler and Peja is aging and not the player he once was...I like the Frye comments..too funny. BTW did you see Harden is doing well in Summer League?

    Hi Adam,
Interesting post on the 2010 Suns and the possibilities that might lead to the playoffs.
I have no idea if Earl Clark plays any defense. If he was an under motivated college player, does this make him an under motivated pro? Will he even start?
Amare at center is a good move for the Suns. He plays the position well and gives the Suns speed at a position that is a difficult match up for the rest of the league. HE HAD HIS BEST YEARS AS A CENTER.
Carol Channing is a good big man? Excuse me, I mean Channing Frye (who plays like Carol Channing). He has failed with at least two teams and he wasn't really that good at UA. Please, not another 'stick' for a back up center. Put Lopez out there and let him sink or swim. If he can't cut it then the Suns should get rid of him. He just needs maturity and about 40 pounds of muscle. I hope that he is doing something about that this off season.
Do you not think that Portland has improved their roster? Houston has regressed for sure but New Orleans will be stronger. The addition of Artest to the Lakers will keep them at the top. Phil Jackson will have no trouble handling him.
The Suns could make the top eight but not if Amare goes down again.
