Phoenix Suns Are Scorching The NBA

The Phoenix Suns continued their white hot start this season by defeating the Washington Wizards yesterday 102-90. Perhaps as impressive as the victory was the fact 4 out 5 of the Suns starters had double doubles yesterday. Steve Nash, who is currently leading the NBA with 11.9 assists per game had more assists (17) than the entire Wizards team (15).

The Suns are now 6-1 and have some legitimate tough road wins under their belt. This is especially important for this Suns team considering 17 of their first 26 games are on the road. The Suns are 3-1 thus far on this 5 game road trip with their only defeat at the hands of the Orlando Magic. The most compelling victory was at Boston where the Suns were able to dissect the highly regarded Celtics defense. The Suns were able to can 13 three-pointers as well as basically match the Celtics on the boards (39-42).

After the Wizards game, Steve Nash was asked by reporters on how he felt about the Suns 6-1 torrid start.“The minute we start to say we’re a certain caliber team, there’s a danger,” Nash said. “We just got to keep being humble, keep treating this as a project. It’s going to take the whole season.”

Nash’s answer is the obligatory humble response from athletes that show class. However, Nash has to be feeling quite satisfied that the agenda he pushed so heavily is working out so well. Nash supposedly wanted a return to the fast pace Suns from day 1 of Terry Porter’s arrival last season. In addition, it was rumored that Nash was one of the main reasons that Shaquille O’Neal was dealt in the off-season. Nash is sure looking like a genius thus far this season. The offense is markedly more efficient without the “Big Shaqtus” clogging up driving lanes. The Suns are leading the NBA in scoring thru 7 games with 109.7 points per game. Not too bad for a team that many dismissed in the pre-season as being old and likely can only contend for a 7th or 8th seed.

Injury Update:

C Robin Lopez(broken foot) is back on the court but has not been cleared for practice. His foot will be X-rayed again when he returns to Phoenix and is still on track to return at the end of the month. This is even more good news for the Suns as the season progresses, Lopez will be able to back-up both Amare Stoudemire and Channing Frye. This will enable them to be more fresh for crunch time in games.
