Adam,
Thoughtful post as usual. There is a certain 'something' about this
team that is difficult to quantify.
The statistics show that the team is not playing very good defense and yet they are getting 'stops' at times in the game which enable them to catch up or to extend a lead. The rebounding has improved from past years but there are still times when it seems that all five Suns are running away from the defensive boards.
There are so many players contributing that it is a joy to watch. The attitude of the team is incredible. There seem to be no big egos or anyone who has to 'get his' (other than Amare which seems to be OK with his teammates).
What really seems to separate this team from the teams of a few years ago is the strong, active group of players coming off the bench. Steve Nash is playing less than 30 min. per game and the reserves (we need to find a better word for this great group) are holding their own or better. This is the first year since Steve has been here that he can take a seat on the bench and really relax.
This team also has a toughness about it. We don't hear anything about the 'soft' Phoenix Suns this year. Lou, JRich, Dudley and Goran (The Dragon) are playing tough, get in your face basketball. Don't you love it when Goran looses a ball and then goes and takes it back? I sure do.
This team by virtue of their style of play and deep bench put a lot of pressure on lesser teams. The Suns seem to 'own' the late stages of both halves. The Suns ball movement, running and shooting are taking the 'starch' out of their opponents. It appears that many teams simply become fatigued and are unable to perform.
Do all of these factors create a situation where the Phoenix Suns are greater than the sum or their parts? 14 - 3, Who would have guessed?

The Suns, if allowed to run, are an awesome regular season team, but they aren't built for the playoffs. With that said watching teams like the Pistons and Spurs play in the post season blows, so it would be great if the "playoff" style of play was more like the Suns.
